TEACHER ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Qualifications

All teacher assistants must meet one of the following requirements:
 
  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Have a passing score on the Instructional Assistance Test
  • Have a passing score on the District Proficiency Test or Completion of 60 semester units or 90-quarter units from a recognized college or university
 
All Teacher Assistants are, on a continuing basis, required to be enrolled in, and successfully complete, college courses as described below:
 
  •  A minimum of 12 college semester units (or equivalent quarter units) must be successfully completed each school year.
 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics

  • Understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional growth patterns of students.
  • Ability to properly use and to care for teaching materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Appropriate appearance and cleanliness.
  • Commitment to the education of students.
  • Appropriate matter, including poise, tact, and use of good humor.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, language, disability, and socioeconomic groups.
 
Assists teachers or other certificated personnel in preparation for, carrying out, and following up on instruction to individual or small groups of students as assigned; may also assist with instructional materials, audio-visual equipment, and the maintenance of student records. Assists teachers, school administrator and staff with maintaining control of assigned classes to ensure a suitable learning environment, both in classrooms and on school grounds. May be assigned limited responsibility to teach specific subject matter, in which the teacher assistant has special skills or training, to a small group of students, under the immediate supervision of a teacher or other certificated personnel.

DISTRICT PROFICIENCY (DP) TEST AND THE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANCE (IA) TEST

District Proficiency (DP) test and the Instructional Assistance (IA) test for individuals who need to satisfy requirements to become a Para-educator( Teacher Assistant). Testing is held on a regular basis at various locations throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District.

SUPERVISION AIDES JOB DESCRIPTION

Assists in maintaining proper environment and student control at an elementary or secondary
school.
 

TYPICAL DUTIES

Performs regularly scheduled non-classroom supervision duties, supervising students in the
cafeteria, indoor assembly areas, outdoor eating areas, halls and restrooms, on the playground
and in other areas to which assigned.
Enforces activity and safety rules in school buildings and on school property.
Reports problems of a serious nature, including recurring behavioral problems and safety hazards
to the Principal, or another designated certificated employee.
Works with the school staff in alleviating behavioral problems occurring during supervision periods.
Assumes responsibilities in inclement weather as assigned by the Principal or other certificated
employee.
Performs related duties as assigned.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
Safety rules and conditions to be maintained by students
Standards of courtesy and behavior expected of students
Games and sports in which students participate.
Ability to:
Maintain acceptable standards of behavior among students
Maintain poise, exercise tact and good judgment
Encourage students in games and activities
Work effectively with District personnel, community representatives, parents and students
 

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from high school or its equivalent is preferable.
Experience:
Experience in working with youth is preferable.
